Amanda vs Failed Peony Dress

Ladies, gentlemen, technologically inclined marmots- I wish to bring you to the world of Meh Dress.

Meh

Meh Dress is not a horrible dress. It has done nothing to offend me. It hasn’t called me at 3:00am asking for a ride home after getting kicked out of an Irish pub for talking smack to some bikers. Heck, it hasn’t even eaten cauliflower in my general vicinity.
Still Meh

But it is still meh.

I used the same pattern as the awesome psychedelic Peony from late last year and the only amendment I made was to add some length. I’m sassy like that!

Mad Skillz

Construction went smoothly as this pattern felt familiar and comfy. Thanks Colette Patterns! Heck, I even managed to get under stitching working on the collar for the first time!

I also decided to mix things up a bit (I’m crazy like that!) with some epic pocket fabric. I even managed to cut this so the tiny weasel(?) head is right at the edge of the pocket. I’m not sure why but this totally appeals to me…

Stealth weasel

I had originally intended to make the sash in a buttercup yellow but I just wasn’t feeling it last night when I went to cut fabric. Instead I trawled through my stash and uncovered some epic dove grey and white polka dot material. I was worried about making the gathered sash as it would ruin the look of the epic spots. Instead I went with Tilly and the Buttons’ bow belt tutorial. It took me a little while but I got it working and I adore the result!
Spottastic

Overall, I think it is the belt and pockets that make this number but that, in itself, is not a bad thing! Meh Dress and I are cool- I’ll still take for a jaunt around work. Though if it starts calling me at 3:00am asking for a ride home things may change…
meh-ish

And really, who can say no to a polka dot bow belt? Anyone?

Comments

  1. ha ha your writing gets me everytime! I think the dress is cute. The belt looks great with it and those pockets and just too adorable.

  2. Shucks! Thanks, Kat! I am super obsessed with the belt- I think I may have a play around with the fitting on the weekend and see if I can get it moving above meh. Fingers crossed!

  3. The dress is nice, but I think, like me, you need to learn to do an FBA (and I completely get why you might be avoiding it – I’ve been avoiding it for six years!!). The belt definitely isn’t “meh” and I’m now thinking how nice one would look with my new high-waisted skirt.

Just a first thought on the fitting issue – I would unpick the front vertical bust darts and see what happens.

  4. Thanks for the tips, RTS! I’m definitely thinking it is time to take on the FBA! I’ll have a go with the vertical bust darts this weekend and repot back. Hopefully this frock can be saved 😀
